I’m Usman, a software engineer based in Tempe, Arizona. My work connects AI applications with the backend systems that make them useful: retrieval, model training, tool workflows and careful evaluation.

Before joining Arizona State University, I spent 2 years and 9 months at SunTec Business Solutions building enterprise financial-services software. I worked on Java and Spring Boot services, data-processing workflows, SQL optimization and releases with product and QA teams.

I’m now pursuing a Masters in Computer Science at ASU, expected May 2027, and working as a Research Intern. This site brings together my research engineering, product prototypes and earlier learning projects, with a clear account of what I contributed, what was tested and what remains open.

Research Intern

LLM post-training and evaluation in the Cognition and Intelligence Lab, advised by Prof. Chitta Baral.

  • Implemented mistake-specific supervision and sequence-level preference optimization within a GRPO training workflow.
  • Prepared preference data with numeric-answer checks and traceable negative examples.
  • Completed a separate Qwen3.5-4B LoRA supervised fine-tuning component. These contributions belong to distinct research efforts; they are not one combined experiment.
